Battle

Adwa

1 March 1896

Mobilization, terrain, and coordination defeat a dispersed colonial expedition.

Military history

How did the Ethiopian army concentrate its forces to isolate and then defeat the Italian columns at Adwa?

Adwa was an Ethiopian military victory, not a fable in which bravery took the place of organization. Menelik II and Taytu coordinated a vast mobilization, chose terrain that fragmented the enemy, and exploited the Italian brigades’ reckless advance.

An ambiguous treaty

Italy and Ethiopia do not interpret the Treaty of Wuchale in the same way. The diplomatic crisis becomes a war for sovereignty.

Imperial mobilization

Menelik II can assemble very large provincial contingents, but this mass must be supplied and commanded along difficult tracks.

An overstretched expedition

Baratieri advances with several separated brigades. This disposition can cover the ground, but it makes mutual support slow in a compartmentalized mountain range.
