The strategic problem
The Great Northern War pits a highly mobile Swedish monarchy against a coalition that learns to absorb early defeats and rebuild its resources. Charles XII seeks decision through marching and shock; Peter the Great gradually turns Russian space, entrenchments and depth into instruments of attrition.
The Russian impasse
Retreat and the destruction of supplies reduce the Swedish army’s reach. At Poltava, Russian entrenchments and reserves absorb the attack and turn the campaign around.
The coalition retakes the Baltic
Russia now has a stronger army and navy. Sweden continues to fight, but cannot replace its losses or defend all its territories.
