萨拉托加指的是一段连续战事，不能视为一次单独的冲击。9月19日，伯戈因的军队守住弗里曼农场的战场，却未能打开通往奥尔巴尼的道路。等待期间，他的粮食日益减少，而盖茨的军队不断壮大。10月7日，英军的一次武力侦察引发美军反击，先攻向巴伯麦田，继而突破布赖曼阵地。随后，撤往萨拉托加的英军陷入包围。

在哈德逊河西岸，通往奥尔巴尼的道路从一条筑防山脊下方通过。河流掩护盖茨的东翼，并使英军行军路线受到约束；树林、峡谷和糟糕的道路减慢了纵队及其辎重。

9月19日之后，伯戈因加固营地并等待克林顿的消息。美军巡逻队不断袭扰其外围，大陆军增援和各州民兵加入盖茨的部队，英军口粮则在10月3日被削减。
阿诺德的作用应限定在证据范围内
阿诺德在两场战斗中都发挥了重要作用，并在布赖曼阵地前负伤。不过，没有任何已知命令能正式证明他在10月7日之前已被解除指挥；关于他究竟何时加入战斗，各种叙述并不一致。
