A Chinese operational victory destroys one pocket while the rest of X Corps escapes.
Military history
Chosin is neither simply a heroic retreat nor the total destruction of X Corps. The Chinese 9th Army Group severs communications and destroys Task Force Faith as a military organization on the east bank. To the west and south, however, UN forces retain perimeters, a base at Hagaru-ri, combined-arms firepower, and a road that can be reopened in stages. Withdrawal becomes a succession of battles to unite the pockets, retake heights, and cross the passes. The axes of attack are established; sources differ over the attribution of some Chinese divisions, and those disagreements remain explicit.
The reinforced 1st Marine Division advances toward the reservoir as part of X Corps’ autumn offensive. Available reports already note Chinese movement, but estimates of likely action remain overly optimistic. An official Chinese synthesis describes the intention to exploit enemy dispersion, followed by the general attack on 27 November. This institutional source establishes an intention and narrative axis, not perfect execution of the plan.
The reservoir stretches between valleys and heights; the Hungnam–Hagaru–Yudam-ni road is narrow, winding, and lined with fragile bridges. Units can hold separate perimeters, but reuniting them depends on this single line of communication.
Freezing conditions slow engineering, vehicles, medical care, and supply. Cold does not decide the outcome by itself; it chiefly amplifies the cost of any road interruption and makes air evacuation and convoy cover even more important.
Sources describe the same attack axes without assigning divisions identically everywhere. Frozen Chosin’s order-of-battle table distinguishes the 20th Army (58th, 59th, 60th) from the 27th Army (79th, 80th, 81st); some tables add the 89th as an attached division. Its narrative places the 27th Army’s 80th on the east bank and the 20th on the MSR axis. In the cited passage, the official U.S. Army history identifies the 79th and 89th at Yudam-ni and the 80th against Task Force MacLean/Faith without assigning it to the 20th Army. The CGSC preserves disagreements in tactical identification; they do not justify turning every contact into certainty.
