How did distributed preparations open an operational rupture whose momentum ran out before Kovel?

The Russian Southwestern Front begins with an auxiliary role in Stavka's plan. Brusilov nevertheless chooses to prepare four armies and several assault sectors so the Austro-Hungarian staff cannot turn a single warning into a decisive concentration. On 4 June, breakthroughs at Lutsk, in Galicia and in Bukovina produce an effect far greater than the original commitment.

An auxiliary attack becomes real

In spring 1916, the Southwestern Front was expected to support the main offensive farther north. Brusilov nevertheless prepared all four of his armies. He weighted the effort toward the 8th Army at Lutsk while requiring genuine attacks in the other sectors. Delays and then the failure of Evert’s Western Front deprived the advance of the hoped-for cooperation and made it easier for the Central Powers to shift reserves.

Preparing surprise through distributed fire

Southwestern staffs bring assault trenches forward, register batteries, reconnoiter works from the air and rehearse crossings. The method is not an absence of preparation: it distributes genuine preparations among several sectors and exploits dispersed Austro-Hungarian reserves. Conrad has moved veteran units to the Trentino; Galicia's defenses are therefore neither manned by equally capable troops nor equally complete everywhere.

Different aftermaths in different sectors

Lutsk and the Styr structure the Volhynian axis; Brody and eastern Galicia open other directions; the Dniester, Bukovina and Carpathian passes give the 9th Army a different problem. Kovel is both an objective and a railway junction covered by the Stokhid. A southern breakthrough can therefore yield prisoners and ground without automatically opening the northern railway.

Casualty totals need boundaries before comparison

Casualty figures often mix the Southwestern Front, the entire Russian summer campaign and associated operations through the autumn. This account retains a disputed range for the Russians, separates Austria-Hungary from German units and uses the Austro-Hungarian prisoner total only with the source's stated scope. Operational victory does not justify manufacturing a single retrospective total.
