A campaign in two directions
OKW Directive No. 45 of 23 July assigned Army Group A the advance towards the Caucasus and Army Group B the Don, Stalingrad, interruption of Volga traffic and preparation for the direction of Astrakhan. Stalingrad therefore mattered both as an operational objective and as protection for the Caucasian flank. This division did not doom the offensive in advance, but it lengthened communications and dispersed the available reserves.
